[edit]From Sanskrit जामातृ (jā́mātṛ), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́ā́mātā, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ā́mātā, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵem- (“to marry”). Cognate with Kashmiri zamaturu, Romani zhamutro, Hindi जमाई (jamāī), Persian داماد (dâmâd), Baluchi زامات (zāmat).
