[edit]Etymology
[edit]The origin is uncertain.[1] Ačarean rejects the similarity with Sogdian 𐫃𐫡𐫏𐫐 (gryk /ɣrēk/, “earth, dust”) from Proto-Indo-European *gleh₁y- (“clay”) as coincidental.[1]
Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *weryo-, from *weh₁r- (“water”), whence for example Sanskrit वार् (vār, “water”).[2][3][4][5]
