From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-naːj ~ s-nej (near) (STEDT). Cognate with Tibetan ཉེ་བ (nye ba, near), Mizo hnai (near), Jingpho ni (ni³¹, near), Burmese နီး (ni:, bear near; be close), (OC *niɡ, “intimate; close”).
