Inherited from Sanskrit पातयति (pātayati, “to throw, cause to fly or fall”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pāt(H)áyati, from Proto-Indo-European pot(h₂)-éye-ti (“to fly”), from the root *pet(h₂)- (“to fly”). Cognate with Pali pāteti.
