[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *wers-. Cognate with Latin verrūca (“high place; excrescence, wart”), Lithuanian viršus (“top”), Old Church Slavonic врьхъ (vrĭxŭ, “top, peak”), Ancient Greek ἕρμα (hérma, “reef, rock, hill”), Sanskrit वर्ष्मन् (varṣman, “protrusion, summit, peak, top, vertex”).
