[edit]Compare Lithuanian kepùrė, Latvian cepure. Probably from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kep- (“to ditch, to chop”), akin to Proto-Slavic *kopati (“to dig”), Proto-Slavic *skopiti (“to castrate”).
