[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *gudilas, from Proto-Indo-European *geyd- (“to sting; prick; tickle”). Cognate with Lithuanian kùtinti, Latvian kutinât, Proto-Germanic *kitilōną (“to tickle”).
