Usage

This template provides information about when a sense was first used, generally given to the nearest century. The template is placed at the end of a sense-line, after the definition.

Examples

  • For words that are still in use, please specify from a given date.
    e.g., {{defdate|from 17th c.}} returns [from 17th c.]
  • For obsolete senses, two parameters may be given, automatically printing an en dash.
    e.g., {{defdate|17th|19th c.}} returns [17th–19th c.]
  • References can be added using the |ref= parameter. If there are multiple references, |ref2= and |ref3= should be used.
  • References can then be named using the |refn= parameter. If there are multiple references, |ref2n= and |ref3n= should be used.

Cleanup

For entries using hyphens (which should in some cases be replaced with en dashes), see Special:WhatLinksHere/Wiktionary:Tracking/defdate/hyphen.
