From Javanese ꦧꦤ꧀ꦢꦼꦭ꧀, ꦧꦤ꧀ꦝꦼꦭ꧀ (bandel, bandhel, obstinate, stubborn; undisciplined, disobedient; brave), probably from Old Javanese waṅhĕl (braced up, obstinate), waṅal.
