French
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Old French courre, corre (modified under the influence of -ir verbs), from Latin currere (“to run”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱers- (“to run”).
Pronunciation
[edit]Verb
[edit]courir
- to run
- to hurry; to rush
- 2016, Gaël Faye, Petit Pays [Small Country]:
- Ce soir-là, en sortant du travail, je cours me réfugier dans le premier bar, en face de la gare.
- That evening, leaving work, I rush to take refuge in the nearest bar, opposite the station.
- (Louisiana) to go
- Courez chercher mon livre! ― Go get my book!
Conjugation
[edit]This verb is conjugated like other regular -ir verbs, except that in the conditional and future tenses an extra 'r' is added to the end of the stem and the past participle ends in -u. All verb ending in -courir are conjugated this way.
