From Proto-Balto-Slavic *dirˀwāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *dŕ̥Hweh₂.[1] Cognate with Latvian dirva,[1] Russian дере́вня (derévnja, village)[1] and Sanskrit दूर्वा (dū́rvā-, panic grass).[1] See also dìrti (to flay).
