[edit]Back-formation from Old Spanish greñon, from Medieval Latin grenniōnem, ultimately from Proto-Celtic *grendo- (“mustache, beard”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰren- (“facial hair”). Compare Middle Irish grend, Irish greann.
