[edit]From Old Norse grípa (“to grab”), from Proto-Germanic *grīpaną, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰreyb- (“to grasp, grab”). Cognate with Swedish gripa, Norwegian Bokmål gripe, Icelandic grípa, English gripe, West Frisian gripe, Low German griepen, Dutch grijpen, German greifen.
