From Old Norse , from Proto-Germanic *mugjō, *mują, *muwō (midge), from Proto-Indo-European *mū- (fly, midge), *mu-, *mew-. Compare Swedish mygga, Danish myg, Icelandic , English midge, West Frisian mich, Dutch mug, Low German mügge, German Mücke.
