Etymology

From Ancient Greek πόλτος (póltos, porridge) and the suffix -φαγία (-phagía), combining form of φαγεῖν (phageîn, to eat). See also suffix -phagy.

  1. (rare) The chewing of food long enough to reduce it to the consistency of porridge.
