[edit]From Amphitruo, a comedy by the Roman playwright Plautus (c. 254 – 184 BC), in which doubling is the major theme: both the title character and his slave, Sosia, are doubled by the gods Jupiter and Mercury, in order to enable Jupiter to make love to Amphitruo's wife.
