[edit]Noun
[edit]tarti
Lithuanian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *ter- (“to cry out, yell”) (though Smoczynski expresses slight doubt).[1] Cognate with Latvian târlât, Old Prussian tārin; outside of Baltic, cognate with Proto-Slavic *tortoriti (“to jabber, babble”), Hittite [script needed] (taranzi, “they say”), Old Armenian ընթեռնում (əntʻeṙnum, “to read”), and perhaps Old Irish tairm (“noise”).[2] The oft-compared Sanskrit तार (tārá, “loud, shrill”) and Ancient Greek τορός (torós, “piercing, thrilling”) are not related (assuming the Proto-Indo-European roots which the latter two stem from are themselves not related to *ter- (“to yell”) on a larger timescale).[3]
