Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Turkic *yeŋe (“elder brother's wife”). Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (yengä, “older male relative's wife”); Turkish yenge (“wife of one's brother or uncle”), or, dialectally, "a woman that guides the bride on her wedding night", Crimean Tatar yeñge, Kazakh жеңге (jeñge), Kyrgyz жеңе (jeŋe), Southern Altai јеҥе (ǰeŋe), Uyghur يەڭگە (yengge), Yakut саҥас (sañas, “older male relative's wife”) Bashkir еңгә (yeñgə, “the wife of one's elder brother”).

[edit]yengə (definite accusative yengəni, plural yengələr)
- A woman who guides the bride and prepares her for the nuptial night, follows her to the bridegroom's house, and, upon the consummation of marriage, brings the sheets covered with blood stains back to the parents' house as a token of the bride's virginity; sometimes also functions as a matchmaker.
- yengə getmək ― to do the duties of a yengə
- oğlan yengəsi ― a yengə from the bridegroom's side
- qız yengəsi ― a yengə from the bride's side
- Yengəsiz toy toy deyil. ― A wedding without a yengə is no wedding.
