The Fire Temple,(OoTOcarina of Time | STSpirit Tracks | TFHTri Force Heroes)[1] also known as the Mountain Temple,(STSpirit Tracks)[citation needed] is a recurring Dungeon in The Legend of Zelda series.

Overview

Ocarina of Time

Entrance to the Temple

The Fire Temple is located deep within the Death Mountain Crater and is only accessible to Link by use of the Goron Tunic, which is given to him by Darunia's son, Link, in the hopes that he will rescue the other Gorons.[2] Being in an active volcano, the Fire Temple is filled with many lava pits including the boss room. In the boss room is a giant rock platform where the battle takes place.

Themes and Navigation

The maze of the rolling rocks on the third floor

Link's progress in the Fire Temple is based on opening jails so that the imprisoned Gorons can be freed. When a Goron is released, he gives Link a clue or tip regarding the use of the so-called special crop,[3][4] although some offer other facts; Link also receives keys to open locked doors. Throughout the Temple, there are bridges and platforms over magma that must be crossed, as well as complex mazes (one of them consisting of Flame Walls). Once the Megaton Hammer is found, after defeating the mini-boss Flare Dancer, Link may use it to break obstacles or create new paths.[5]

The Flame Wall maze on the third floor

The dungeon as a whole is notable for having a nearly-symmetrical architecture: From floor three upwards, the interior of the temple is divided into two, although Link only needs to visit the western territory to succeed on his quest (in fact, the other portion can only be accessed from the third floor by using the "Scarecrow's Song").

The Temple is home to an ancient dragon, Volvagia, who is known to have eaten Gorons in the past.[6] Defeated by an ancient hero with the Megaton Hammer,[7] he was resurrected by the evil Ganon.[8] The only real defense against the dragon is the aforementioned Hammer, which Link can put in practice as soon as the dragon is hesitating in one of the fire holes placed in the battle arena's floor.

Similarly to the rest of the dungeons, the Fire Temple was altered in the Master Quest version of Ocarina of Time. Honoring the name of the dungeon, the first rooms require Din's Fire to light several torches. Compared to the original version of the dungeon, the redesigned layout features a lesser focus on enemies and a stronger focus on puzzles. Additionally, most make use of the Hookshot. Some invisible walls and time blocks are found in the dungeon. Also, some switches need the Spin Attack to be activated, including one that is hidden inside a crate and can't be seen. There are fewer Gorons than in the normal version as well. Most doors are blocked with iron bars, and the Big Key and Megaton Hammer come very early. New enemies include several Stalfos, Lizalfos (found in the boulder room) and even an Iron Knuckle.

Spirit Tracks

Entrance to the Temple

The Fire Temple is located at the summit of the mountain in the Fire Realm. Link has to meet with Embrose to play the Song of Fire Restoration and open the way to the dungeon. The area where the temple lies is guarded by three Snurglars, all of which hold three keys that will open the entrance to the temple once retrieved by Link.

Themes and Navigation

Link crossing one of the first obstacles

Many of the puzzles in the temple involve platforms that can be used to stand atop small volcanoes, and Arrow Aimers that redirect the trajectory of an arrow. In a similar way to the Cave of Flames in The Minish Cap, the Fire Temple houses minecarts that help Link move from a point to another quickly. The dungeon item is a Bow, which is obtained after defeating the Sub-Boss of the dungeon, Heatoise. Cragma is the boss of the Fire Temple. After he is defeated, the Spirit Tracks connecting the Fire Realm to the Tower of Spirits are restored.

In both this temple and the following one, the background music is different from the usual dungeon theme heard in the first three temples.

Minor Enemies

Tri Force Heroes

In Tri Force Heroes, the Fire Temple is the fourth and final Level of the Volcano Area. It is preceded by Den of Flames.

Themes and Navigation

Crossing the first Lava gap in Stage 1

Stage 1 is a treacherous landscape with pools of Lava. A Bow, Gust Jar and Boomerang are provided for the Links to use. Wearing the Goron Garb will also help, as it makes it possible to swim through the Lava. To complete the Stage, the Links must first cross a pool of Lava by using the Gust Jar and Boomerang. The Link with the Boomerang will need to act quickly, since he lands on a Lava Rock that will soon sink under his weight. The Links then press three Floor Switches at once while avoiding Guruguru Bars, which opens a large door ahead. They come to a pair of Hardhat Beetles and another pool of Lava, where they must run across more sinking Lava Rocks and work together to activate three Shock Switches simultaneously with their Items. Alternatively, they can use the single-player strategy of having the Link with the Bow stand in the center Slab and fire Arrows diagonally to hit all three Switches. Once they are lit, the stairway to the Triforce Gateway will be appear.

Battling a Hinox in Stage 2

In Stage 2, the Links appear on a platform high above the Lava, with a pair of Pots filled with Hearts in each corner. They are soon faced with a Hinox in a Mine Cart that circles their platform, throwing Bombs. In defeat the Hinox, the Links must either toss the Bombs back to the Mine Cart, or use the Boomerang to retrieve Bombs from the Bomb Flowers growing on pillars a short distance from the platform. They can also deal minor damage by forming a Totem of two and firing Arrows at the Hinox. After it is defeated, the Links are beset by two more Hinoxes that attack in the same manner. Once they have all been defeated, a bridge to the Triforce Gateway will lower to onto the platform, allowing the Links to proceed.

Pushing a Large Block in Stage 3

Stage 3 features a Large Block that sits on a grated platform above several recurrent Lava Geysers. When the Block is placed over a Lava Geyser, it will be blasted into the air for several seconds; this allows the Links to form a Totem of two on top of it and reach a Shock Switch elevated high above the platform. However, as the Switch is blocked by a railing on three sides, the Large Block will need to be pushed or pulled by all three Links together to slide it to the other side of the grated platform, while avoiding Lava Geysers along the way. Once it is placed on red panel that indicates where a Geyser will blast through, the Links can be thrown on top of the Block and form a Totem, then hit the Shock Switch with one of their Items once it is raised. This lowers a bridge leading to the next Triforce Gateway, which has a Squiddy next to it.

Battling Moldorm in Stage 4

Stage 4 is where Moldorm is fought upon a grated platform, where Lava Geysers periodically blast through. The Links each appear on a separate catwalk, and the battle begins once they all drop onto the platform. On each side of the platform is a ledge with several Hearts, which can only be reached by one of the Links throwing another onto it.

Drablands Challenges

Once Moldorm has been defeated, the Fire Temple can be replayed with the following Drablands Challenges: "Clear within the time limit!", "Evade the Wallmaster!", and "Only Bombs—no swords!".

In "Clear within the time limit!", the Links are given a timer of one minute and 30 seconds in Multiplayer, or two minutes and 45 seconds in single-player. This timer can be increased by collecting Hourglasses or wearing Linebeck's Uniform.

In "Only Bombs—no swords!", an extra sinking platform is added to the start of Stage 1 to allow the Links to cross the pool of Lava.

Materials

At the end of the Level, three Treasure Chests can be opened. Two contain the same Material, and one contains another, more valuable Material.

Trivia

  • In the early NTSC v1.0 and v1.1 releases of Ocarina of Time, the Fire Temple's music sampled Islamic recitations from the Qur'an.[note 1] This, like the original Crest of the Gerudo, was removed from later revisions of the game by Nintendo because of the religious association. These Islamic recitations were replaced by a MIDI Synthesizer in later releases, ports, and the Nintendo 3DS remake.
    • Contrary to popular belief, this change was not made in response to any existing controversy. The first revision to include the change (PAL v1.0) contains a build date of November 10, 1998, over a week before Ocarina of Time was released in any region.[9]
  • In Ocarina of Time, despite it being advised that Link purchase the Goron Tunic before entering the Fire Temple, the majority of rooms do not require it. The only rooms where the heat will prove lethal to Link if he stays there long enough are the ones that contain large pools of magma, including the Boss room.
  • Additionally, despite Sheik's directions, it is possible to complete this Dungeon before the Forest Temple.
  • In Ocarina of Time, the 3-block stacked statue concealing the door in the main entrance that requires the Megaton Hammer could be a reference to the Japanese game Daruma Otoshi. These statues are also found in one room in the Gerudo Training Ground.
  • The European name of the Fire Temple in Spirit Tracks, "Mountain Temple", may provide an explanation for why the Rabbits in the Fire Realm are called Mountain Rabbits and not Fire Rabbits.
  • The Fire Temple in Tri Force Heroes was one of the Levels included in the E3 demo and in the distributed demo version. In the former, it was known as The Volcano.
  • As described in Vol. 3 of the Drablands Diary, some fossilized bones are hidden in each Level of the Volcano in Tri Force Heroes. They can be found after defeating Moldorm in Stage 4 of the Fire Temple by throwing one or more of the Links onto a ledge above the Triforce Gateway, then shifting the camera upward.

  1. The first part of the Arabic samples were deciphered as "Sal-Allahu-alayhi-wa-alik" which means "May God grant peace and honor him (Muhammad) and his family.", followed by "Dhul-Galali-wal-ikram," meaning "The Lord of Majesty and Generosity". The second part of Arabic samples was deciphered as the Basmala; meaning "In the name of God, the Most Gracious, Most Merciful", followed by the Takbir; literally meaning "God is Great".
