Squid-Hunt
Squid-Hunt is a Minigame in The Wind Waker.[1]
Location and Rules
The Squid-Hunt Minigame is found in the Game Room inside the lighthouse on Windfall Island. Salvatore introduces the game by portraying several naval characters under attack by a school of giant squids.[2][3] During the game, Link must find and destroy three squids hidden in random locations on an 8×8 grid by firing cannonballs at squares of his choosing. A miss results in a blue X appearing on that square, while a hit reveals the squid's body segment that was found. The squids are two, three, and four body segments in length,[4] always appear in vertical or horizontal straight lines, and do not overlap. Link is given 24 cannonballs to sink all three squids.[5]
The first time Link succeeds in defeating the squids, he is rewarded with a Piece of Heart by Salvatore portraying a group of grateful children.[6] A second victory yields Treasure Chart #7.[7] Every subsequent victory nets a Purple Rupee.[8] If Link manages to destroy all three squids using fewer than 20 shots, he will also be rewarded with Treasure Chart #23.[9] After Link has obtained both Treasure Charts, he will receive an Orange Rupee every time he beats his personal record.
Trivia
- In the Japanese version of The Wind Waker, the goal of the game is to sink ships rather than squids.[10] Salvatore also has a different voice in this version.
- In 2020, nearly two decades after The Wind Waker's initial release, members of the Speedrunning community reverse-engineered the Minigame and published an open-source probability calculator for it.[11]
