titleOfInvention Method and apparatus for monitoring consciousness during anaesthesia
abstract The present invention provides apparatus and methods for determining the state of consciousness of a subject, particularly a subject undergoing anaesthetic treatment. The apparatus and methods include acquiring physiological data included in biosigπals such as EEG measurements. The apparatus includes means for acquiring at least one continuous biosignal which is preferably an EEG signal, means for stimulating at least one evoked potential signal in the EHG signal such as an auditory evoked potential (AEP) or response (AER) and analysing the charactenstics of the signals to determine an index from the characteristics. The stimulus for an AER may be any suitable stimulus including clicks, spoken words. Alternatively it may be a somatosensory stimulus. The evoked potential responses of particular interest are middle-latency responses. The index is calculated in a classifying and weighting process which arbitrates between the importance of signals according to the state of consciousness. The index may incorporate Information from biosignals acquired from muscular movement in addition to EEG signals.
