- La Pallice (also known as grand port maritime de La Rochelle) is the commercial deep-water port of La Rochelle, France. During the Fall of France, on 19 June 1940, approximately 6,000 Polish soldiers in exile under the command of Stanisław Sosabowskiarrived at La Pallice, from where they were evacuated to Great Britain - thus able to go on fighting till the end of the war. Under the Nazi Occupation of France, La Pallice was used as a U-boat base from October 1941 when the 3rd U-boat Flotilla was moved there from its base in Kiel. La Pallice was subject to the allied siege of La Rochelle in 1944–45, which ended with the capitulation of Germany. The large submarine base built at that time still stands largely is not in use. It was used as a backdrop for the film Das Boot (1981) and Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). La Pallice is equipped with oil unloading equipment, and mainly handles tropical wood. It is also the home of La Rochelle's fishing fleet, which was moved from the old harbour in the city centre during the 1980s. (en)

Il se classe au 6e rang des grands ports maritimes de France en tonnage de marchandises, 1er port européen pour l'importation de grumes et 1er port français pour l'importation de produits forestiers et pâtes à papier. Il représente plus de 85 % des échanges de marchandises du transport maritime de la région. Du fait de sa situation dans le quartier de La Pallice, dans la partie ouest de la ville, il est également appelé port de La Pallice. Port autonome depuis le 1er janvier 2006 à la suite du décret no 2004-1378 du 20 décembre 2004, il a reçu le statut de grand port maritime à la suite du décret no 2008-1036 du 9 octobre 2008. Le grand port maritime de La Rochelle est un établissement public qui exerce conjointement des missions de service public administratif et des missions de service public à caractère industriel et commercial et qui est géré comme un établissement public à caractère industriel et commercial (EPIC) dont la tutelle de l'État est exercée par la Direction générale des infrastructures, des transports et de la mer du ministère de l'écologie, du développement durable et de l'énergie. Il est administré par un directoire de trois membres; Président du directoire, Michel Puyrazat. Son conseil de surveillance comprend notamment des représentants de l'État, du personnel, des collectivités territoriales (Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Charente-Maritime, Communauté d'agglomération de La Rochelle, commune de La Rochelle) et de la Chambre de commerce et d'industrie de La Rochelle. Un conseil de développement de trente membres assiste les organes statutaires. (fr)

Het is een commerciële haven in diep water, vernoemd naar de Franse filosoof La Pallice. De grote onderzeese basis, gebouwd tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog, staat er nog steeds, hoewel hij niet wordt gebruikt. De haven kan schepen tot 200.000 ton ontvangen. La Pallice is uitgerust met olielosapparatuur en met kranen voor het lossen van tropisch hout. Op dit gebied is het de belangrijkste haven van Frankrijk. Via deze haven worden veel landbouwproducten geëxporteerd. Op dit gebied is het de op een na belangrijkste haven van het land. Ook is er een droogdok aanwezig. De maximum diepgang voor schepen, die de haven willen aandoen, bedraagt 14 meter. De oppervlakte van het haventerrein is 543 hectare. In 2018 geldt de haven "overall" als de zesde in grootte van Frankrijk. Het is ook de locatie van de vissersvloot, die van de oude haven verplaatst werd van het centrum van de stad tijdens de jaren 1980. (nl)
