Quail disambiguation[edit]
Hello: Thanks for fixing the quail page, but I think I over-reached. When I saw the page, all I saw written was the info on the 2 familes (Old World and New World, so I thought having Quail be the disambig page, and then splitting the 2 families would be sufficient. I didn't realize there were 400 pages linked to the page, a lot dealing with farm production, hunting, cuisine and the like. We should probably restore the quail page to it's original format (I'd do it but I don't know how). I'll reference the dismbig page above, as well as write some stuff about raising, hunting and using them as food production in the article. Hopefully that should stop any future confusion. What do you think?.....Sorry again....Pvmoutside (talk) 00:16, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
- Frankly, I don't know enough about quail to know whether there is a primary topic. bd2412 T 16:40, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
- Having looked over it a bit more, I agree that the original meaning is the primary topic, and have put it back to that. Cheers! bd2412 T 17:47, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
I've hit a problem, here. I tried moving the current Chirality page to Chirality (disambiguation), and the draft page to Chirality, but it was disallowed; it has to be an admin move. I noticed on your userpage that you're an admin; is that something you'd be OK to do, or am I best taking it through RM (I don't know what the rules/guidelines say about that sort of thing). Sortname/doc & Tom Jones[edit]
OK. I admit it. I'm confused. I can understand you missing the point first time, and then realising it, and then repairing the damage. But twice? Care to unconfuse me? Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 04:00, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
- It just shows up every time on the list of incorrect links to the disambiguation page "Tom Jones". The list keeps growing and growing, and must therefore be cut down every few months. bd2412 T 04:10, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
- I see. Well, if you can come with a different example that illustrates the same points, but doessn't cause you the same level of grief, please feel free to substitute it into Tom's place - I'm sure Tom won't mind, and neither will I. Pdfpdf (talk) 13:49, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Hello again
I was planning to edit this page a bit, but as what I had in mind was part of our other discussion I thought I should mention it first, and also to let you know in case you've un-watched it. Regards, Moonraker12 (talk) 15:51, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
Intentional links to disambiguation pages is policy, per WP:INTDABLINK; consensus has been reached and repeatedly reaffirmed that this is necessary as it is the only way to prevent such links from showing up as errors needing to be fixed on the "What links here" pages. Cheers! bd2412 T 16:30, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the message. I've now read the text at WP:INTDABLINK that you've pointed me to, but I'm not clear what you are asking me to do. Have I done something wrong at Strawberry? Or is there something I still need to do? SilkTork ✔Tea time 16:37, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Your cryptic 2005 Incompdab tagging[edit]
Would you like an opportunity to dissuade me, in my DabCU of Dockers Union, from dismissing your tagging of it w/ {{incompdab}}? --Jerzy•t 19:51, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
- Do you perhaps know of a Dab for non-British-Isles dock-workers' unions (e.g. International Longshoremen's Association), which could at least go in a See-also secn?
--Jerzy•t 20:20, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
- Fixed. The problem is dabconcept, not incompdab. There should be an article on what, exactly, a Dockers Union is in the general sense. Cheers! bd2412 T 00:29, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
- Interesting analysis which i shall mull. Thanks!

Celine Dion discography[edit]
Why did you tag this with {{dabconcept}}? It's a perfectly acceptable split. Some artists with particularly long discographies split the singles and albums discographies off to separate articles to reduce length, accessible from a dab page. And splitting to "X discography (disambiguation)" makes no sense. Ten Pound Hammer, his otters and a clue-bat • (Otters want attention) 06:35, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
- Celine Dion albums and Celine Dion singles are not two separate topics that coincidentally happen to have the same words in their names (like Georgia (country) and Georgia (U.S. state)), they are two subdivisions of a single topic. There's nothing wrong with splitting up the Celine Dion discography into multiple pages for the convenience of the readers, but that is not a disambiguation page, it's just a list of articles on a single topic. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 14:22, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
- That's still how it's done with other discographies. Would you rather the page be eighty zillion bytes long and take six minutes to load? You're being insanely pedantic. Ten Pound Hammer, his otters and a clue-bat • (Otters want attention) 15:18, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
- How did you get from "There's nothing wrong with splitting up the page" to "you['d] rather the page be eighty zillion bytes long"? Before you start calling other people names, try improving your own reading comprehension and reasoning. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 15:46, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
- TenPoundHammer, please read R'n'B's initial response more carefully, as he has it exactly right: There's nothing wrong with splitting up the Celine Dion discography into multiple pages for the convenience of the readers, but that is not a disambiguation page. The resulting page is really just a list, even if it is a short one. Consider, if someone says "I like Mercury", you don't know if they mean the planet or the element or the Roman God or the car (or something else entirely). If someone says, "I like the Celine Dion discography, they are probably talking about the entire concept, the collection of both albums and singles. The best solution would be to have a short article at Celine Dion discography summarizing the contents of her discography, and linking from there to the complete lists of singles and albums. bd2412 T 15:54, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Where do I report copyright issues concerning a book that has copied material from Wikipedia? While doing research for the boogaloo style of dance I came across Popular Dance: From Ballroom to Hip-Hop on Google Books. While reading the chronology section, I noticed that the entry for 2007 was copied almost verbatim from what is currently in the Education section of the Hip-hop dance article. I posted a notice here on Wikipedia's mirrors and forks list but I'm not sure if this is the right place since the "mirror" I found was a book and not a website. Where do I post a notice about a book that has copied text from Wikipedia? I figured since you're an administrator and since you have so many edits and so much more experience on Wikipedia than I do that you would be a good person to ask. //Gbern3 (talk) 21:30, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
- We have dealt with this issue before. Wikipedia's content is free to copy so long as the origin of authorship is acknowledged. If such an acknowledgment appears anywhere in the book, they can do as they wish with it. bd2412 T 23:52, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
- That's the problem; there is no acknowledgement of Wikipedia. I purchased the book from Amazon to make sure. I looked in the Notes, Bibliography, and Further Reading sections twice. Wikipedia isn't there. There are books and journal articles listed but nothing about Wikipedia. So since there is no acknowledgement, where do I post a notice about a copyright issue concerning a book? //Gbern3 (talk) 16:42, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
- Actually, that is quite an interesting question. I can not seem to find a place to report such a thing. I'll look further. bd2412 T 17:15, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
- How do we know that the book copied from Wikipedia, and not the other way around? --R'n'B (call me Russ) 17:19, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
- Still, presuming that this is indeed copying of Wikipedia material (which is possible, the book having been published in mid-2010), where do we report such a thing? I can find no easy answer. bd2412 T 20:13, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
- It appears that the book copied Wikipedia. The book was published in 2010 but the material that was copied has been in Wikipedia since August 2009. Click here to see when it was first added. The sentence about the degree program at the University of East London appears almost verbatim in the book. //Gbern3 (talk) 20:30, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
- Based on WP:Copyrights and WP:Mirrors and forks, there does not seem to be anyone to report it to. The reason for this is that the book author has not violated Wikipedia's rights; they have violated the article contributor[s]'[s] rights. Therefore, any one who contributed the text that was copied may be entitled to contact the author and publisher of the infringing work. The Mirrors and forks page seems to suggest that anyone else could do this, too, but that it is preferable for it to be done by a user whose copyright is being infringed. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 23:48, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
- Since there is no place to report it, is there a way to prevent someone from tagging Hip-hop dance#Education section with a {{copypaste}} banner? Just in case someone else stumbles upon the book like I did, I don't want them to think that the editors here on Wikipedia copied it. //Gbern3 (talk) 03:10, 30 October 2011 (UTC)
- A hidden comment a the section should do it. bd2412 T 03:21, 30 October 2011 (UTC)
- Great idea. I will do this. Thank you for your help. //Gbern3 (talk) 01:21, 1 November 2011 (UTC)
I don't see the reasons for this edit. Either Image or File can be used for images on WP (unless this has been changed recently) so mass changing from one to another does not seem right per stability. The only other change was BC to BC, which is a better link but as part of a date or a common unit it should not be linked at all.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 02:28, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- The point of the edit was to fix the disambig link. Whether it should be unlinked altogether is a different discussion. The Image --> File changes are just gravy. bd2412 T 02:32, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the quick reply. I've delinked the date, but am unclear what you mean by gravy. Would you think the latter is covered by WP:STABILITY or not?--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 02:52, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- I would think not. Stability is about style, such as using British English or American English spelling in an article. I don't see why it would cover changing our leftover Image links to File links. It's not the kind of thing people edit war over. bd2412 T 02:54, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- Leftover? WP:IMAGE says 'The "File:" prefix may be used interchangeably with "Image:"', and I've read nowhere that Image is being phased out. My own reading of the stability rules is it covers any formatting change, visible or not, that doesn't improve the article in some way. It it certainly is more borderline than e.g. WP:ENGVAR though, and I've no plans to revert it, so we'll just have to disagree over it.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 03:34, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
This should not normally be linked, any more than dates. See the examples at WP:ERA. Thanks Johnbod (talk) 19:32, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- The disambiguation term was already linked in these cases. I merely fixed the existing link to point to the right target, without determining in any specfic instance whether such a link was justified. Cheers! bd2412 T 19:50, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
Disambiguation pages with links[edit]
I have notice that you changed John Taylor (Mormon) and John W. Taylor (Mormon) using AWB. Both times the change broke the link. Is there an issue with AWB?--ARTEST4ECHO (talk/contribs) 21:43, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- Wow, thanks for catching that. I've fixed all of them back - that was a mistake on my part, not an AWB issue. Cheers! bd2412 T 22:03, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- That's ok. I make mistakes ALL THE TIME. I'm just not that familiar with AWB, or most bots for that matter, so I wasn't sure if this was a case where a "Bug report" was needed.--ARTEST4ECHO (talk/contribs) 13:18, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

Disambiguation lists[edit]
Hi BD! Thanks for the heads up about the "November" list. I was workingJason's disamb links (no specified month).
Just so I'm clear (something that doesn't always come as quickly as I'd like ;) ), when you said work the "existing list" on my talk page did you mean the November list, or this larger list? Either's fine with me.--CaroleHenson (talk) 02:16, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
- Well, of course, every link fixed is a good thing whether it's on the November list or not. However, we have a sort of monthly contest to see who can fix the most links from that original list, and it usually has a lot of regular offenders in terms of large numbers of links. bd2412 T 02:18, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
I have removed the prod tag you placed on Walkthrough because per policy an article that has been discussed at AfD is permanently ineligible for prod. Additionally, I highly doubt that deletion of an article that was so recently discussed at AfD is going to be uncontroversial. I have no prejudice against opening another AfD, and will most likely not !vote in such an AfD should you or anyone else choose to open one. —KuyaBriBriTalk 14:41, 7 November 2011 (UTC)
- I think the AfD closure in this case is exceptional. Although there were three !votes favoring disambiguation out of seven participants, no discussion was made about whether the term is actually ambiguous in accordance with WP:DABCONCEPT, nor whether a primary topic exists, nor of the criteria governing disambiguation pages. Since the page should properly be reduced to the two terms which are actually ambiguous and contain "Walkthrough" in the title, I will propose at the WikiProject Disambiguation to deal with this as a WP:TWODABS situation. bd2412 T 15:39, 7 November 2011 (UTC)
Hello, my friend. Remember a couple of months ago when you asked me about a bot to add dates of births and/or deaths to the entries on hndis pages? Well, it turns out that it's not a good task for an autonomous bot because of the many quirks in how pages are formatted, but it is susceptible to script-assisted editing. So I've set up User:R'n'B/birthdeath for testing of a script for this purpose, which you are welcome to try out. (At least at first, I strongly recommend checking the box to "skip pages without suggested changes" at startup.) Let me know what you think! --R'n'B (call me Russ) 17:01, 7 November 2011 (UTC)
- To be honest, I'm not sure what exactly this is supposed to be doing. bd2412 T 14:11, 8 November 2011 (UTC)
- It loads up each human name disambiguation page and looks at all the links on it, to see if any of them contain birth and/or death year categories. If so, it then looks to see if any of those birth/death years are missing from the disambiguation page, and tries to insert them in a reasonable place. (This step is the part that is far from perfect and requires close review.) It then displays the suggested changes in the diff panel, and allows you to edit manually in the edit box below. A few added features: (1) if you edit, you can update the diff immediately by clicking on "Show changes"; (2) you can also click on any of the blue-underlined links in the diff display to open the linked article in a new tab, to double-check the dab page's description.
- Is it not working for you, or is it just not clear what to do? --R'n'B (call me Russ) 15:04, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
- What do you mean by "it loads up each human name disambiguation page"? Loads it in my browser window? In dabsolver? I gather there's a list somewhere from which pages are loaded, but I don't know what I am supposed to be loading. bd2412 T 17:05, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
- The pages are retrieved from Category:Human name disambiguation pages. But you don't need to worry about that. All you need to do is click the "Go" button and the pages will be loaded automatically. (Are you sure you refreshed your browser cache?) --R'n'B (call me Russ) 18:20, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
- Still confused - where do I find this "Go" button? I have refreshed my browser cache several times to no effect. Could my existing javascript be interfering? bd2412 T 17:15, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
- Did you load the page User:R'n'B/birthdeath? The script should start immediately when you navigate to that page. I've tested it on IE8, Firefox, and Chrome.
- Oh, I would suggest you remove the <pre> tags from your
monobook.js page! --R'n'B (call me Russ) 18:53, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
- The computer I am working on is a bit wonky - I'll try again this evening from a different one. bd2412 T 18:55, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
- Although I did get it to run in IE8, it is not reliable in that browser; there are some name conflicts that I'm having trouble resolving. If you have Firefox or Chrome, try using that. Sorry for any inconvenience. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 19:01, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
- No apologies, I'll figure it out when I get to a computer with Firefox. Cheers! bd2412 T 19:03, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

Which mint do you use in cooking?andycjp (talk) 05:15, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

I would prefer to leave it as it stands, and let the user decide.andycjp (talk) 05:22, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
- Actually, the article in this case isn't referring to a species of mint, but to the flavor (which can be achieved without using any particular mint plant), so I would go with Spearmint (flavour). As for letting the user decide, there are many other meanings on the disambig page which have nothing to do with mint as a flavor, and eventually someone will need to come along and fix these links. Even if mint has multiple possibilities, there is only one reasonable possibility for icing, and only one for spring, is there not? bd2412 T 05:25, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

- Much appreciated! There are certainly other issues with that page, now that I look into its detail. But at least we now have a better idea of how to fix this technical omission. NoeticaTea? 23:18, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
- Hello! There appears to be some disagreement regarding how to interpret one of your comments. If you wouldn't mind dropping in to clarify, it would be much appreciated. Thanks! —David Levy 00:51, 27 November 2011 (UTC)
Disambiguate help on U.S. Constitution[edit]
Thanks for help on disambiguate at U.S. Constitution. You nailed five items on the money. The only quibble relates to the meaning of "Guard" for Patrick Henry in 1776. They would be the "elite soldiers" broadly described in the "Governmental and military" section of "Guards". I guess the most famous ever were Napoleon's Old Guard. The kind of dudes it would be scary to have upstairs taking over your bedrooms. The reader at U.S. Constitution would probably be best served to have a link to the Wiki dictionary, but I'm not sure how to do that. Do you know the wiki syntax code? Thanks again. TheVirginiaHistorian (talk) 10:20, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
- That would be [[wikt:guard|guard]]. Cheers! bd2412 T 16:27, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
Hello there. I have seen you active on U.S. law articles in the past, and I thought I might ask you for a favor. I have made some additions to Roe v. Wade recently. I was wondering if you might be able to look them over. As a non-lawyer, I worry that I may have gotten some of the finer points about rights and rationales wrong in my writeup. NW (Talk) 22:32, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
- I don't see anything wrong there. bd2412 T 01:11, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
- Great, thanks for the double-check. NW (Talk) 06:30, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
You are invited to the National Archives ExtravaSCANza, taking place every day next week from January 4–7, Wednesday to Saturday, in College Park, Maryland (Washington, DC metro area). Come help me cap off my stint as Wikipedian in Residence at the National Archives with one last success!
This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. The event is being held on multiple days, and in the evenings and weekend, so that as many locals and out-of-towners from nearby regions1 as possible can come. Please join us! 1 Wikipedians from DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Newark, New York City, and Pittsburgh have been invited.

An editor has asked for a deletion review of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Fictional women of Passions, volume 1. Because you closed the deletion discussion for this page, speedily deleted it, or otherwise were interested in the page, you might want to participate in the deletion review. National History Museum (with caps) disambiguation page[edit]
Hi. Saw your work on this disambiguation page, that has 95% less info than the List of natural history museums page and almost has the same url, only with all first letters of words in capitals. Shouldn't the former be fused with, or redirect to, the latter? (I don't know how to do that.) Cheers --Henri Hudson (talk) 07:33, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification[edit]
Hi. When you recently edited Larry Lehman, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Mike Sullivan (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hello, I was wondering if you could help with this dab. I'm not sure if it is an incomplete dab, and if so what to do with it. Thanks, Boleyn (talk) 10:18, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
- From the descriptions of the articles, it seems that this is not a WP:INCOMPDAB problem, but a WP:DABCONCEPT - the two articles linked on the page seem to describe different elements of the same military effort, an Eastern and Western prong of an encircling attack in a particular region of Korea from November to December of 1950. bd2412 T 20:15, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi. I'm a bit puzzled by this restoration:
- 20:00, 31 January 2012 BD2412 (talk | contribs) restored "Stephen Joseph" (73 revisions restored: restore buried history)
as the restored material refers to a completely different person from the one in the current article. Is that appropriate? SamuelTheGhost (talk) 20:28, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
- I didn't realize that until I had restored it. In fact, I did so precisely to see if there was anything in the previously deleted version that might be useful for the current version (which, there being none, I set aside to deal with a brewing storm on another project). I'll get around to re-deleting it soon. Cheers! bd2412 T 21:12, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
- Done. bd2412 T 21:45, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
Hi! Hope all's well. I see you've been tagging a number of pages with {{Conceptdab}} but leaving them as disambiguation pages. FYI, in recent weeks, in cases that look clear, I've been WP:BOLD and just removed the {{Disambiguation}} template at the same time I added {{Conceptdab}}. Of course, not every case is that clear, but it is one way of working through the backlog. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 23:12, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
- I prefer not to remove the {{Disambiguation}} template until the page has been converted into something other than a disambiguation page. I fear that taking this out of the disambig mix will effectively make it invisible to those most likely to fix these deficienies. bd2412 T 23:15, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
What do you imply by"possibly spurious" in your post at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Megagon (2nd nomination)? Edison (talk) 04:23, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
- I have replied in the AfD. Cheers! bd2412 T 14:26, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
Qin (surname)/(disambiguation)[edit]
I saw that you had reverted my edit of Jin. You're right that that still points to a disambiguation page. What is the best solution for Pages that link to "Qin"? It doesn't seem to make sense to change all of those Qin (surname) links to Qin (disambiguation) because at some point somebody might get around to writing an article for Qin (surname) like Jin (surname). Also linking to Qin (disambiguation) doesn't seem to me to make sense according to WP:INTDABLINK. I'm relatively new at this so I'm still not clear on the best approach. Thank you. SchreiberBike (talk) 21:12, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
- The reason we link to the "Foo (disambiguation)" title is that it removes the link from the list of links needing repair by making it clear that the disambiguation page is indeed the intended target. The best solution for Qin is probably to go ahead and create a separate page at Qin (surname) providing the details about the name itself that are not appropriate to include in a disambiguation page. Cheers! bd2412 T 22:14, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

- The edits of which you complain were a completely correct set of double redirect fixes, following a consensus-driven page move. I note that your "reversion" of my edits was immediately itself reverted by a double-redirect fixing bot. A barnstar for you![edit]
What made you decide that Cherson refers to Cherson (theme)? My guess is that it refers to Kherson and was inserted twice because of the different spelling. (User:Nesher, who inserted both Kherson and Cherson in the first place is off wikipedia permanently so we can't ask him). Sincerely, -- -- -- 23:15, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
New York villages within towns[edit]
Hi BD2412. I saw your reference to Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links/New York villages within towns yesterday on the DAB Challenge page. Is New York the only state for which a project page exists? I'm asking because Swanton, Vermont came to mind. Can you do your magic with that one too? Greetings LittleWink (talk) 20:00, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
- The New York discussion was pretty narrowly focused. I would not object to initiating a discussion aimed at making it general policy applicable to comparable situations in all states. bd2412 T 20:02, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
