Add topicHello. I came here as you asked. So, what was wrong. Thank you very much. IKhitron (talk) 11:25, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
- Hi IKhitron. Let me start by saying that right and wrong aren't very useful categories, usually. There is no need for polarizing language among people who collaborate :) As I wrote: This team is good and consistent in flagging items for Tech News consideration. Next time, please add the relevant tag to the task, or suggest that is added, so that they are also aware and can help with wording, in case. TY! Because the Editing team is pretty independent already when it comes to TN, a very last minute addition that they have no opportunity to comment or collaborate on looks unnecessary. So I am simply recommending using the Phab tag next time, should you find that they may have forgotten about it. Writing TN is as collaborative as any other process, and your help in making sure everyone gets better at doing it is welcome! --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 11:45, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
- And I promissed you to add this tag in the future. But my question was about your replic "I don't think the line that was added to Tech News about this change is accurate". What was wrong in the text I added to the issue? Thank you. IKhitron (talk) 13:40, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
- Oh, I thought you meant something else. I just think the item could be a bit more precise. I understand that it was reworded a bit later, and I hope the current language doesn't leave any space for confusion. However, that involved double-checking with the team, a bit of scramble, etc. Again, not a big deal, but avoiding similar situations is the direction which my previous advice aims at. Take care, TTYS! --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 13:49, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
- OK, I see. Thank you. IKhitron (talk) 13:51, 19 February 2018 (UTC)

Tidy to RemexHtml
[edit]Hello, Elitre. I read your message about replacing Tidy with RemexHtml at fywiki, where I am an administrator. Not everyone has studied computer science, you know (or wants to). The instructions you refer to are completely incomprehensible. If you can't explain what's going to change and what we're supposed to do about it in plain English, you might as well not have placed this message. Also, according to this LintErrors list you mention in your message, we at fywiki have 24,370 errors we should somehow repare (although how we should do that remains entirely unclear). With 2 active administrators that is just not going to happen. Ieneach fan 'e Esk (talk) 15:18, 2 July 2018 (UTC)
Question about translation
[edit]Can we translate the page https://donate.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:LandingPage&country=RU&uselang=ru into other languages? (text "We are not fundraising in your country") In the sidebar menu in ruwiki (https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Википедия:Форум?uselang=en), this link is shown in Participation/Donate. qqx-link https://donate.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:LandingPage&country=RU&uselang=qqx does not work, but qqx exists for other pages https://donate.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:LandingPage&country=UK&uselang=qqx (changed country to uk in link). --Sunpriat (talk) 19:45, 9 July 2018 (UTC)
- We have a translation in Finnish language, see https://donate.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:LandingPage&country=FI. It's translated at donate:Template:CountryNope/FI. I don't know who made the translation, maybe some third-party company. Stryn (talk) 21:24, 9 July 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks, I'll ask the author of that page (Pcoombe). --Sunpriat (talk) 01:37, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

Question about pageviews
[edit]Hi. In ruwiki we sometimes analyze different data for articles. And we saw several anomalous peaks of views.
- https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Википедия:Форум/Новости#Статистика_пиков_просмотров_статей_в_2018_году
For example we can not explain the short peak in unpopular articles:
- https://tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews/?project=ru.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&start=2018-08-07&end=2018-08-09&pages=Городское_поселение_Одинцово
- https://tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews/?project=ru.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&start=2018-03-31&end=2018-04-02&pages=М_(фильм,_1931)
Is it possible to somehow investigate whether it was a computer failure (сould this be a wiki-bug), an attack of bots (сould this be a strange use of Wikipedia services; was it in a short time (by the hour)), interest only from one country (it is unlikely that these are views from a link from another site) or something else(is it normal or not)? --Sunpriat (talk) 23:38, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Sunpriat: Hi, I asked a dev and they suggested that you should file a phabricator task with this information (and perhaps one or two more examples, if you're discussing other specific pages at Ruwiki), and tag it with #reading-analysis -- I suggest using the "File a Request" link at the bottom-left of the workboard -- then the experts in that area should be able to help tell you more details. These types of anomalies apparently do happen all the time, but I'm not familiar with the details (i.e. common reasons) beyond that. Cheers, Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 19:59, 3 January 2019 (UTC)
- Ok thanks. Filled it in phab:T212963. --Sunpriat (talk) 19:26, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
Call for complementary facilitators and more to get the ASBS 2019 process started!
[edit]Hi everyone, hope all is fine with you!
The next weeks will be intense, as affiliates figure out their participation in the process that will soon select 2 people for the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. Since new Bylaws established that the user groups are for the first time going to be involved in such process, a lot more support than before is certainly going to be necessary, among other things, for big and healthy conversations on the topic. Hence, please encourage members of your group to become a complementary facilitator, or sign up yourself! You can add yourself to the list on Meta or reply to me to flag availability. One person from the facilitators group should soon be selected to liaise with the Foundation Board’s Chair, María Sefidari, on behalf of all affiliates, and it may be wise to also find a deputy for them.
Finally, if you can think of any huge obstacles that would prevent your group from participating to the process (for instance, a language barrier, or lack of good decision-making mechanisms, etc.), please reach out to me directly: it is really important that we hear about them as early as possible. Thank you! Elitre (WMF) 15:15, 12 March 2019 (UTC)
Update on the Affiliate-selected Board seats 2019 process
[edit]Hi all,
The Election Facilitators met on Friday, April 5. We finalized the resolution, which is now frozen. The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation will be asked to approve the resolution.
We have made two small changes to be more inclusive. We extended the date for compliance with AffCom reporting and being in good standing to May 7 to allow time for as many Affiliates as possible to be current with these requirements. The Election Facilitators adjusted the language in case a quorum is not met during the election.
On the talk page of the resolution one issue was raised. The issue looks like to be about a possible candidate. Affiliates will have ample time to discuss the merits of candidates during nomination time, screening time, and they can cast their votes on candidates. The Election Facilitators didn't see the necessity for this change, and left the resolution on this point unchanged.
The Election Facilitators will be Abhinav Srivastava, Lane Rasberry, Jeffrey Keefer, Ad Huikeshoven, Neal McBurnett and Alessandro Marchetti. We will welcome more volunteers to assist us in this process, to reach out to the diversity in language and gender in our communities, and do so in an advisory role.
The nomination period opens on April 15. We are going to prepare nomination pages on Meta. You can expect a call for nominations. There is a draft call, including a candidates' profile section with non-binding guidelines about experience and characteristics for nominees. You are welcome to add your insights, or discuss on the talk page.
Erica Litrenta (WMF staff) supports us in this process. She will reach out to all affiliates through mail and other channels to make sure we are up to date with (user)name and contact details of your primary contact.
On behalf of the Election Facilitators, Ad Huikeshoven 10:42, 6 April 2019 (UTC)
Primary contact Wikimujeres UG
[edit]We would like to know who is currently the primary contact for this group in your records, because we need to know who would be casting the vote in the Affiliate Selected Board Seats process. We know that is important, but we don't remember who signed the agreement with WMF when the group was created, and anybody received so far the email about the electoral process. Update about the Affiliate-selected Board seats process 2019
[edit]Hello everyone!
- The Resolution has just been approved by the Board of Trustees!;
- Nominations phase is now open, from April 15 00:00 UTC to April 30 23:59 UTC. See the Call for Candidates and Nominations pages;
- Community members may ask questions of the candidates;
- Your main representative has just received an email to confirm that they are indeed the primary contact and will perform official actions on behalf of your group (such as endorsing candidates and then voting). Some groups also need to verify their eligibility status in due time, as explained in the email;
- New content is available to spread awareness around the process - the infographic on this page has clickable links and can be translated, and a primer is available, that we hope will be particularly helpful to those new to such a process;
- Finally, you are welcome to help with translations! Pick one page from the ASBS category and, in the next couple of weeks, please consider translating profiles of the candidates in particular.
Thanks for your attention! The Facilitators for ASBS 2019, 07:30, 15 April 2019 (UTC)

Feedback on ASBS translations into Arabic
[edit]Hi Erica,
Thanks for your message and I am pleased that I am taking part in supporting the Wikimedia community. I should flag that I have expressed my interest to Gregory Varnum in becoming a member of the organization translators group as a contractor, which means my following opinion is not free from bias. Also, my opinion is not just based on being a volunteer, but also as a certified translator from English to Arabic.
I have not reviewed all statements by candidates, but I will share my impression about those I saw and had the chance to edit and modify. The translation was generally acceptable, but I can assume that the translator is not a professional translator. Names and titles of projects were transliterated, though the majority have their own translations, which indicates that the translator did not fact check their work. At times what comes to mind as a translator in terms of translating titles is different from the actual translations, Wiki Loves XX is an example, as the "Wiki Loves" part is not translated the same in all translated instances, which makes fact checking and verification important. Use of nominal sentences is usually not encouraged in long sentences, as the choice for such sentences is verbal since it sets the action and tense of the sentence from the very beginning. The translation did not follow this rule and the result was to a degree confusing. The writers of candidate statements are neither professional writers nor native speakers of English, which gives the translators a level of freedom to focus on the meaning intended rather than rely on the exact words of the writer and their order, since the traditions of writing in Arabic differ from other languages. This requires slight changes to sentence structure and to avoid unnecessary use of passive voice in the source, since it does not have the same effect in Arabic.
I hope the above was helpful and wish you all the best.

How to process a lot of data
[edit]Hi. In ruwiki, we would like to provide information for the users in numbers and graphs about the population ( https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Шаблон:Население https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Модуль:Statistical ). On the one hand, we have population censuses and data for different years. On the other hand, we call this data through a template simply by specifying the name of the city. But there are many thousands of cities. Working through lua-modules, we made a unique hash of the name of the city and, by a unique hash, we further searched for numbers on the population. But these are >60 tables of 3000 elements ( https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Шаблон:Население/STA-061 ) for these unique hashes. lua mw.loadData results in maximum use of the amount of memory allocated for lua. When the hash was placed in the templates ( https://ru.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Модуль:Statistical&diff=83973924&oldid=82885634 ) and searched through the switch and expandTemplate, then the slow operation of the switch results in maximum use of the work time allocated for lua. And further template calls for the public return the red text of the error "lua limit reached". Can the developers tell us a faster and more practical way to work with such a large amount of data? --Sunpriat (talk) 20:17, 10 June 2019 (UTC)
Hello. You are receiving this message because of your recent activity in the Translations namespace. The Research team is developing a new algorithm that automatically recommends sections for editors to add to articles. Translations have already occurred for some of the few languages that they are targeting with their invites to test, except for Spanish and Russian. If you have some time in the next few days, please consider translating the short message (only 6 items) they aim to send out in one or both of these languages. (And if you feel like you want to support your tester peers even more, you can do so by taking care of the related instructions page.) Thank you! Elitre (WMF) 14:52, 19 June 2019 (UTC)

Feedback into Russian
[edit]Hello. This is my feedback to Russian translations. This is basically a copy of my letter so you can refer to this message.
Earlier, I worked in the Quality control department of a leading Russian translation agency and continue to cooperate with several more until now (as a linguist, editor, and translator). Therefore, it is a pleasure for me to evaluate the quality of translations. :)
- First of all, the translators did a good job. I see that they were native speakers who build phrases well.
- Second - this is a recommendation to you for the future - you need to create a glossary and recommendations for translation. This is the best way to make life easier for the translator and make the translation better.
- In all Russian-language Wikimedia projects, since they are educational in nature, we definitely try to use the letter "Ё" (Yo). This is a long-standing problem in the Russian-language media - often this letter is replaced by a similar one (Е). The native speaker, as a rule, understands where Е is pronounced (like e in "yes"), and where Ё ("yogurt"). But, of course, we in WM movement should use academic standards - always and everywhere. So, the first recommendation for translators - Do not ignore the letter Ё.
- Another problem - translators couldn't know which phrases are already used to denote certain phenomena. They translate correctly but synonymously. For example, "Board of Trustees" - let's see our variant for Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees - «Совет попечителей» (Sovet popechiteley), and this option is mainly presented in translations. But I saw in three nominations the construction «Попечительский совет» (Popechitel'skiy sovet). This is not a mistake, it is just a slightly different design, like America Cup / Cup of America, but I think it is better to use the same grammatical construction for such important definitions.
- Finally, I do not think it is right to use the original language (English) in those situations where Russian-language analogues are already being actively used. I understand that the translators were careful because the vocabulary in our movement may be unexpected. :) I'm talking about things like: Wikimedia User Group Nigeria («Группа участников Викимедиа Нигерия»), Wikimedia Netherlands («Викимедиа Нидерланды»), Wikimedia Serbia («Викимедиа Сербия») etc. I believe that such definitions should be translated, and the Russian-speaking community agrees with me. For example, Викимедиа Украина - "Wikimedia Ukraine" translated into Russian - not English nor Ukrainian option. Same situation with Wikimedia Armenia (article «Викимедиа Армения»). And, of course, «Фонд Викимедиа» (Fond Wikimedia), not «Wikimedia Foundation» (but its OK with "WMF" abbreviation with Latin letters).
In general, these are all basic notes.--Soul Train (talk) 19:58, 8 July 2019 (UTC)
