She checks it out over and over. She thinks the animals are funny and cute. It's time to go to the library again and she wants to check it out once again. Funny thing is the book isn't there. Lola gets sad and all she wants is her book. Charlie tries to help her find another book since it is the library. He goes through all the different things one can read. Finally Lola gives a monkey book a try and now this is the best book in the world.
Isn't that kids. They have their mind set on something and that's what they want. I guess we partially grow out of that and some things we sort of stay that way. It can be hard to change and do things out of our routine. I've gotten where Wednesday night is french fry night. It's all I want for dinner.

This boy begins eating his books. He's able to digest them and get smarter and he enjoys being smarter and he continues to eat more and more until he can't digest them and he starts to forget everything. I love 6+2 = elephant. It was all mixed up.
One of the great touches is the last few pages look like a bite was taken out of the lower corner, even the back board of the book. It was great.

Kids will love all the cute animals. Who couldn't love a flamingo reporter, even the owl was cute. Jan Brett should do a story with flamingoes. It's untapped potential.
This book is in the Hedgie series. I have high regard for Jan Brett and put her on a pedestal and this one shows she is only human. It's not terrible, it's only so so and for Jan Brett, that's being human.
Anyway, there are way better Jan Brett books to try first, in my opinion. Do as I have done and save this one for last. I think I have two books left to read by her. It's been such a fun journey....more
A fine middle grade book about an Asian American growing up in a mostly white New England school. It reminds me a whole lot of Beverly Cleary's Tales of the 4th Grade Nothing and Superfudge, but not as funny as those. This has a more serious tone.
The story starts off at Chinese New Year and the start of the year of the dog. The dog is about friendships, loyalty and finding oneself. Pacy is in 5th grade and she is going to try and find herself, who she is during this year. She tries several things to see if she has talent like a science fair project or singing in the school play. The whole while she is drawing.
It must be nice to be so good at something that is showed up as a child. I was simply a good student. It took most of my life to figure out that I'm a healer. Anyway.
There was something special about this book and yet it was so simple. I loved the little stories that were told about her parents, or uncle or grandmother when they were young in Taiwan. I found that fascinating.
I want to go ahead and read the other two books in this Pacy Lin series. I got this from the library....more

I read this back in April and I'm just putting up the the single review. To be honest, I don't remember a whole lot from this. I wasn't really into it, but it was very creepy.
I did read that this started out as a dream Neil Gaiman had and it haunted him and he eventually put this into a story. It's also been made into a graphic story, but I haven't see that story, just read it as a short story.

It's a monologue and a strange little story too. A man is telling his life story in a bar and don't you hear the strangest stories in a bar. The absurdities are numerous. His father dies and so his mother has a sex-change to be his father. That is pretty twisted to say the least.
Neil can put some amazing stories out there and some really strange ones too. I guess that is part of the creative process and by not holding back we get a look into an artist and how it works. Somethings are genius and then some things are horrible and a successful artist just keeps producing art, regardless of the merit of the creation. It's a lesson.

In his notes about the stories, he even admits to wanting to pass on his fears of port-o-potties to us and grossing us out. I had to skip over some parts because I just wasn’t able to read it anymore. I did not like this story. It was unpleasant to read, and King always has to give us at least one of those.
A man fighting bitterly with his neighbor is taken in by a rouse that the neighbor is giving up the fight. Syke. He traps our protag in a port-o-pottie and tips it over. King relishes being as graphic as possible as what happens in this torture scene and it only gets worse. I can’t wait to forget this horror.
The ending was okay, but a little disappointing. I like it and I wanted more and I’m satisfied. Sue me. This could have been a brutal ending and King choose a different path. The suspense was good, even if totally gross....more

It's about a man with a family who decides to cheat on his family with a woman he meets at a conference. He has no remorse about the deal, but the woman does.
I found it hard to be able to relate to the protagonist at all. I can't feel anything for his character accept that I don't like him. I know this sort of thing happens, but I didn't enjoy reading about it. I didn't think there was much of a twist or anything accept telling this despicable character's story and not making him likable. It happens all the time and it's part of life, but as a reader, I wasn't crazy about it.

The last book, Susan, one of the 4 children is separated from the other children. Neil Gaiman writes this short story about Susan after the other children are killed in a train crash.
Susan has to keep on living. She has to identify the bodies of her siblings, she has to live alone without parents and siblings. She is a professor and the real world goes on for her. She has to keep going. Susan was a children during WWII and this story takes place in the 80s because the interviewer of Susan references Matilda by Roald Dahl which was written in the 80s, so Susan is an older woman here.
The books were published and so the interviewer is asking Susan about why she didn't get to go on to the heaven areas with her siblings, was it really just hat she likes stockings and lipsticks. Susan tells her she wasn't on the train and so she lived.
There are some great philosophical questions asked in the story and the reader is allowed to make up their own mind on what is going on. The interviewer has a nightmare at the end that really twists the Narnia books. It's creepy and good.
I thought this avenue of thought about this story was really cool and I love Neil diving into this subject. I think this is a great short story for anyone who reads the Narnia books. The short story comes from Fragile Things. ...more

This story is rather humorous. An old wealthy man hires a hitman to kill this cat that he believes is a hellcat and killed 3 other people in the house. The end of the story, we get to see the cat in action.

The town that Pet Cemetary took place is mentioned in this story and it does remind me of the Mist, all the monster’s coming from a hole in reality. I also get images from Pet Cemetary when they walk back in the woods for the first time and hear the giants walking about.

We meet a man at the doctor being told his Cholesterol is high and he needs to do something about it now. He explains the digestion process as like a work crew clearing the streets. Our main man is an artist so he decides to start working out and his creative juices go into overdrive. He sees that cure the doctor was talking about in his painting.
I loved how Stephen King explains the aging digestive process. It makes a lot of sense. I love the painting idea, and it did get creepy there at the end, but I don’t know if it was a good kind of creepy. I was expecting something else, but the more I think about it, the more I think this works.
I think there is a soft message here and it seems to be moderation. We can be too healthy and unhealthy and a donut now and then isn’t a bad thing. I think I’m liking the ending more and more, so I am going to give this story 4 stars. ...more
