Even a bigger yay, I wanted to speed up my reading even more, and I found a course online. Awesome! And Alice in Wonderland was the recommended read. Even a bigger yay, right? I've seen the cartoon, I liked the cartoon. I'm sure I'm gonna love the book it's based on. Except this has to be the strangest book that's ever been written (and this comes from someone who regularly scans through A Clockwork Orange because I like how fucked up it is. I'm weird, but that's not the point). As I see it, the whole book is supposed to be a metaphor about growing up, learning unusual things and creating your own opinions/finding yourself (Alice says things like "I'm not the same girl I was this morning" that make me draw this conclusion). But it's just so infuriating. Because yes, she goes on this adventure, and she sees and learns things. But what are those things? IT'S ALL JUST GIBBERISH. At least it reminded me why I stay away from classics. Cause most of them are crazy af.

Some sentences gave me the feeling that it was meant for a younger crowd, not all YA enthusiasts; it just felt immature at times. I don't really get the hype over it... But all in all, it was a fun, quick read. And I, of course, will be reading the rest of the series because of my need to finish every series I've ever started....more

It infuriated me the entire time, this book is so hyped up, but there isn't much to it except for the story. The characters fall flat, there is barely any development, I found the plot predictable, and let's not forget the writing which is just not good (though hats down to the six, well-placed quote-worthy sentences that buffer the hell out of the writing style). There isn't anything organic about it, including the dialogue (and most of this book is dialogue). I felt like I was reading a script half the time, but not really because with scripts you know exactly who speaks at any given time, you have to guess in this book. Dialogue tags exist for a reason. It seems to me like this was the notes for the first draft, and not a finished product. I really wish that it was written better. The story deserves to be written better.
As the finale of this rant, here is a gif, the same one I used in my second update cause I can't find a better one that says exactly how I feel:

I'm really split when it comes to this book because I expected to love it. What I paid most attention to with this book was the writing style, and the writing style is amazing. But the things that are supposed to make sense of the entire plot aren't there, I had so many questions throughout that the text didn't answer at all. The story had potential, but those plot holes I just mentioned took it down. I wasn't wowed by the characters either, while there's complexity, I found it that there isn't any big character development, especially with Nix, the protagonist. I look forward to the sequel though, I really want to know if we'll get some questions answered, or some moving forward with Nix's character, which I feel like is overdue....more
I started reading with all the facts in front of me. I should not be as disappointed as I am. It's probably because from experience I know that there I started reading with all the facts in front of me. I should not be as disappointed as I am. It's probably because from experience I know that there is not one literary agent on this planet that would give this book a chance after reading the first ten pages.
It's lazily and sloppily written. It's predictable. It's unrealistic.
Penny is extremely open and out-going for someone who suffers from panic attacks. I've read alternative universe fanfiction where everyone is either a vampire or a zombie that is more realistic.
Don't even get me started on how so many things were happening, but nothing was really happening. I barely got through it. I read a four hundred page book on my most hated paranormal creature in under five hours, these 350 pages took me over twenty hours.
Maybe a concept in Storybook before starting the next one? And filler paragraphs don't hurt, they give the reader a break from all the BS. I'm not talking to Zoe of course, I'm talking to whoever wrote this for her.
I had more respect for Zoella before this book happened. And now I see that it's first in a series and that pisses me off even more.
I know exactly why this is happening, but I do not know how many better books got turned down for this one to be published. I want to read those books next....more

While her writing style is great, once again the plot and characters disappointed me. I expected so much more, this book is so hyped up. And I really thought that I would connect to it because I'm a lot like Cath (mental illness, writing, and college dropout squad). Instead of being blown away like the masses, I witnessed a book that falsely presents anxiety (which offended me by the way, I wish that having a crush on someone magically cured it), characters that were just meh (with the exception of Levi), a protagonist that was unbelievably asocial (this coming from someone who hid in their room to battle panic attacks while relatives were over, just two days ago), and a wanna-be Harry Potter series (that made me cringe at how bleak it was). I found everything about this book annoying. I don't know why. I hope I haven't put any other Rowell titles in my jar of randoms, two are enough for a while....more
