DThis book is about Demeter and Persephone, but mostly about Demeter. There are also some trigger warnings, because those dang gods were rapey aholes.
Demeter and her siblings are saved. Everything is good, everyone are happy. They are gods. They rule the world. But those who know mythology know that things do not always stay the same. Demeter has twins, and she becomes very protective of Persephone and centuries go by.
Demeter here is rather timid, and scared. She has not become an angry earth goddess yet. She finds love, she looses love. There are more kids, footnotes in her immortal life. She is so sad and scarred by her past.
Persephone has her own story first that her mother knows nothing about, here I honestly do not know if this is a real part of the myth or not. But yeah Hades, underworld, and Kore as she was called first finding her own self worth. Also Hades was the biggest puppy there is, omg, no one say one bad word about this man. He was adorable.
A good book that kept me entertained.
Great narration. All the different voices, moods and settings. Pure emotion...more

Veronica and Stoker has made up again and life is good. Until they get a wax figure, who is not wax but an embalmed woman. Creepy.
Veronica and Stoker are not really pulling their weight here. They have help from a cop and a journalist and those do most of the work. They even say so at the end.
Who is the woman? How was she killed? How has she been like this for 15 years? There is some mad science behind this. A nice mystery.
I do still like these, but like with all long running series, I would like to see an end one day.
I really do not have much to say. Good book....more

It was short. Well narrated. A voice a bit too soothing though, not so good when you are sleepy.

It was an interesting world, an England of sorts where WW1 just ended and the men are returning home. Many with ptsd. There is magic, but the upper families hide that they are in fact the ones holding it. Miles the main character has magic, but he has the kind that he is doomed to be a sort of magic slave to someone else. Someone who would take magic from him and leave him used up. So he left.
There is a murder mystery that goes deep, and there is a threat that is growing bigger for each moment. Actually several threats but who is counting. And then there is a romance blossoming between Miles and a handsome stranger he meets.
But damn it was a trilogy! Now I need more, damn it....more

An old house. A murder. But who did it? Miss Marple do the rescue. Since it is 1 hour long I can not say much but she has it all figured out as always.

Sienna has always had this fear of even the word rape, and when she starts seeing her past life all the pieces comes together. But in the present her husband is under pressure to find a serial rapist who brutally kills his victims.
The present was tense, you knew something big was coming, and then things turn dark.
Her past life is brutal too. She was a noblewoman in Ulster in the 1500s. She married a king. The English was there. It was not a good time. I did wonder though about the portray of her husband. Everyone warned her of him and he was so kind to her and loved her through everything. The trigger warning come into effect here and it gets so dark, really too dark. It was hard listening to.
In the present, well, some things are unforgivable. I was not a fan of her husband here. All he did was work, was over smexed, and then something happened. Not cool.
It took me a while to listen to this. It was good, but also very dark. Many from the past has been born again, and the baddie is as bad as ever.
The narration was good. Different voices for different times. I have no idea if the Irish ones were correct, but to me they sounded really good to me. She made it intense. There is also a male narrator that was just as good. It worked well with them together...more

Was there an Emperor born into poverty, becoming a monk and then emperor? Yes. Was he a girl? NO, he had like a million kids on his million concubines. BUT, what if that boy died and his sister assumed his identity? A good twist (how they will handle the many kids that will come dunno)
So yes a poor girl is born in a village. Everyone dies. There are mongols, raiders, and rebels. The girl becomes a monk. She is steadfast in becoming her brother and taking his destiny. I liked her spirit, she truly believed she could just pretend to become her brother and therefore get that greatness he was promised.
Zhu never gave up. She became Zhu. She became a warrior. She did everything to get to that fate she was promised.
I liked the story. Though I admit, that with listening it was hard and I am unsure how to spell anything at all. When it comes to the names I would rather have read them. I think it would have have been great in print, but it was great listening too. And omg it would have been such a great tv series. I always mean to watch a Chinese, Korean dramas on netflix but never do. They look epic. And this was epic. With a sweep she killed 10 000 men, ok it took a bit more, but you will see....more

It is the story of the the Mongol conquest. When it starts they have destroyed the Persian Empire and moved on to their next target, all while the Mongol empire itself is starting to crumble.
The book follows Hulagu Khan, his son Temujin, Kokochin one of many wives, and Kaivon a Persian slave.
I once read that the Mongols killed so many that the carbon emissions from humans drastically lessened. And everyone is related to Djingis cos he raped his way across the world. They were truly evil invaders. They also do horrible things in this book, it is a bloody conquest.
So I was rooting for them all to die, haha.
The fantasy twist in it was interesting, I do want to know more about that aspect...I can not say more.

The author is so great at creating the atmosphere. The warmest summer in memory. You can just feel the stiffling heat slowly suffocating you. And then there is the religious doom hanging over everyone. A city ruled by a council, and if you are a thief, a whore, gay they might just kill you. Religous opression and mania is being created.
Lisbeth is pregnant and she has lost all previous babes. Her family are beekeepers, but the council wants their tax. Food is scarce. The heat is insane. And her sister in law returns from a 6 year exile...
Then the dancing starts. The dance plague. Look it up. People centuries ago lost their minds and danced to death.
I can´t say more, but everything falls apart.
A good, and well written book.

Her work takes her into other lives. Esther who marries a nobleman. The Americana, a journalist, who lives life her own way. A social climbing family who will have their downfall, and more.
It shows life as it was back then in Sardinia. And some really messed up things. Most shocking was the whole thing how a woman could be completely be cast out if she was unlucky. And because she had no home she would be branded a prostitute and sent to a brothel. I mean how many ways of effed up is that? It was not easy being a woman back then and the seamstress will learn that too.
The ending is so bittersweet. I was actually rather upset. But then it turned out well in the absolute end. Still, it does show that life is never eas.
I liked the narration. It fitted well with the era and tone. It flowed so well...more

I know some of the Dollar Princesses to come, but Jennie was one of the first, and what a life!
Jennie met and fell in love with the 2nd son of the Duke of Marlbourough. Some drama there, she being an American, he a nobleman. But they get each other in the end, have two kids, one being a certain Winston Churchill.
And then lots more. She had lots of affair, the most noted one with the future king of England. She still loved her husband, but noble marriages were strange. She also did a lot of things I could not have imagined. Like sending aid and going to the Boer war. Her marriages though, dang she must have been a very fascinating woman. One of a kind.
I do confess, I googled a lot! I just wanted to know things before and here at least I knew nothing tragic would happen.
An interesting book about an interesting woman.

All is well is Smyrna, well as well it can be as second class citizens in Turkey. Liana is a young woman ready for marriage, and it was quite interesting seeing how the Greeks did it in Smyrna. And she does get chosen, Vassili is a really good man ad they have a happy marriage.
But, world war 1 happens. The Spanish flu happens. The Armenian genocide happens. The genocide of Greeks in Turkey happens. And so far sort of good. Smyrna seemed to be a safe harbour. But I knew, I knew something bad was coming. The Greeco-Turk was happens. And living as a Greek in Turkey wont end happily.
I do warn you, any book with genocide, well you know people will die. Also wtf is wrong with humankind?! And we can't say oh that was a 100 years ago, it is happening right now. Soldiers raping, killing, mutilating. Humankind is evil, and soldiers turn into animals. But it is also a book that needs to be read, for example we all know which country that has not admitted to the genocide of Armenians.
But yes, a book about living in the shadows of bad thing, and continuing to the end.
And then, something bad did happen, and I cried and cried. It broke me.
A good book that should be listened to.
Excellent narration. She had this calm voice and it was like I was there. A haunting story. ...more
