Aaron Mahnke’s narration of the ominous, the disturbing, and the paranormal is so well told and so well researched it will give you chills whether you read or listen to the accounts. Not only does he bring lore to life, but his dissection and musings on the human psyche accompanying the paranormal plights invite the reader to ponder the legends deeper.
The accounts will taunt you and you will wonder how the absurd could very well be truth rather than a simple folklore. - Sara W....more

An accident that kills two teens the day after graduation is not all that it seems, but what really happened? This story goes back and forth in narration from the different parties involved in the mystery, as well as going between the past and the present. I love this type of storytelling, and I also loved hearing the voices of the teenagers, and then the people they became 20 years after this “lovely lie.” Overall, this is an intriguing story of the lies people tell and the ways people manipulate one another. – Michelle V....more

She also just got out of an abusive relationship, and isn’t excited about telling her old friends about it.
Caroline, the daughter of the newlyweds, disappears into the woods during the wedding while Liz is watching her. Liz does some research, and finds out that Caroline isn’t the first young Black girl to go missing. In fact, Black girls have been going missing from Johnstown on a yearly basis for years.
Jackal is a mystery of a very dark nature, dipping in and out of horror. Is there something supernatural going on in the woods?
This is a good book for fans of the darker side of the mystery genre. I found myself thinking about The Silence of the Lambs a lot while I was reading it.
Jackal is a great mystery that isn’t for the faint of heart.

Though Bosch and Haller have crossed paths in the past, Resurrection puts them both in the same Lincoln, with Haller up front and Bosch driving. An odd couple of protagonists for sure – one a litigator and the other a former cop – what could possibly go right?
Lots. Former cop Harry Bosch helps find old cases that may have been wrongfully tried, and Haller picks up the ball to get them out of jail.
The first case sounds good. Both men are convinced of the woman’s innocence of killing her cop husband. It’s downhill from there with lots of interesting twists and turns.
Fun book, especially because Connolly brings these two odd, somewhat conflicted characters together and really makes it work. Pick it up. You will love. I hope Connelly teams this pair up often enough for a new Netflix Series, too.

The cold-blooded Sandford’s Davenport and Flowers are at it again, solving curious crimes when the path to finding the killer is not curvy and crazy.
The cold-blooded murder of a judge and his two kids is just heartbreaking as it is unthinkable. Getting Davenport back into the crime-solving saddle from his long recuperation from numerous bullet holes from his last engagement is a must.
Has the wife committed this unbelievable murder, or is it the leader of a questionable non-profit? Or someone else?
What I do love about Davenport and Flowers (and can be found in many other thrillers) is the sense of humor of these characters. They are always giving each other a hard time. What is otherwise horrific is blended with humor that makes each of these crime-fighters very human; the kind of human you wouldn’t mind hanging out with.
This is a great read and if this is your first Sandford book, it will not likely be your last, as there are a least a dozen Prey books. -Tom L....more

Maden nicely wraps up two seemingly divergent stories that converge for a last big bang at the end. Hoping to help a fellow former agent find her son at his boss’s request, the plot slowly takes us through a grand conspiracy, hoping to start a war with the US by firing a hypersonic missile at an aircraft carrier in the Gulf.
The book is very well written with great pace, and Maden’s character development is first-rate.

As an old guy, I highly appreciate his usage of Names with character attributes. Repetition makes it easier to track them in an ever-moving plot. Repeating titles, events, and actions, along with the name, when the character is reintroduced is truly helpful, especially in The Collector, which has a large cast of characters.
Ditto for descriptions of locales, which are not only colorful but feel personal, providing more color to the reader. Add these nice touches to the plot, which starts with a simple robbery and explodes into international intrigue with everyone’s favorite villain, Vlad Putin.

Imagine your absentee trillionaire villain uncle dies and leaves you the, no, not the breadth of his inheritance, but the onus to take his place to protect the assets of the company’s multimillion dollar clients and to defend his fortune against a conglomerate of other villainous villains. It, of course, is not as simple as that. There also are technologically inept volcanic lairs, clone technology, intelligent and articulate cats, bombings, jerk dolphins, and the impending and on-going assassination attempts on Charlie.
Charlie has a lot to learn. Chuck Bartowski, without the Intersect, meets Gru in this satirical novel.

To be honest, I stopped a couple of times, but the author kept me reading. It’s a book that wasn't a preferred genre with great characters, a fast-paced plot, and twists and turns that continued to pique interest. Drowning has all these literary components. And more.
The main characters, Chris, Will, and their child, are just fabulous, and the cast of characters from a woman pilot, to military leaders, to Chris' undersea workmates had the depth necessary to carry the plot.
