Woyzeck

One tends not to like what highschool teachers have to teach.
However, when I read Woyzeck (and watched the haunting film too) in school, I knew that this was something out of the ordinary, like an honest review of the casual cruelty that people in power indulge in until the cruelty explodes in the face of stunned society, pretending they didn't see it coming because they didn't care to develop empathy while there was still time.
Wind up a human being long enough, and something painful will happen!

Your review, Lisa, reminds me of my almost traumatic reading experience with Woyzeck at school. It is not that as a 17 year old I would not have seen cruelties in TV, but reading about them make them come to life almost as if having observed them in reality. Until today reading about violence is a mental effort for me and I still did not find the courage to return to this book which started it.

If you ever see a chance, I'd recommend to attend the Alban Berg opera adaptation, Lisa - o so dark but stunning.

I went to see it here in Milano at La Scala many years ago, but i never been able to complete the book the last year of high school...( i do remember that i cheated and let a friend to complete the essay for me and i did back for a ancient greek translation 😔🙈)

It is a brutal experience in high school, I agree!

Bro what the hell, this thing isn’t even COMPLETE!
And no one is sure if the scenes are even in the correct order…
I hated reading this thing so much, THANK GOD that it didn’t take long to do so

I can't say I liked it, but it left a very deep mark on me forever. I believe it is still as relevant now as it was when published
