Change over to Deaths in 2013

[edit]

Just a heads up to contributing editors that the seven-day "overlap" period at the end of each month does not usually apply at the end of December.

The reason is that Recent Deaths on the front page of Wikipedia is pointed to Deaths in 2013 from January 1. This means that deaths from that date need to be reported on Deaths in 2013, rather than staying on Deaths in 2012 for the first seven days (which does not make sense in a new year anyway). I hope all of this makes sense. I just remembered that some editors were surprised/annoyed one year ago when January deaths had no overlap with December deaths. Annoyed? I was LIVID. Happy 2013 everyone! Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 18:29, 27 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmmm, I've had a thought. Recent deaths redirects to Deaths in 2012. Shouldn't it be the other way around? IE Recent deaths is the page name and the year redirects here. Each month can still be created/archived off as necessary. Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 18:32, 27 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Speaking of which, is the new page already set up and ready for the traffic control mechanism to be flipped at midnight on Christmas Island/Vanatau? If it isnt, I can take a swing at it.Sunnydoo (talk) 18:50, 27 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have created Deaths in January 2013 as a redirect to Deaths in 2013, but the latter page has not yet been created. Deaths in January 2013 now deleted by a well-meaning admin. WWGB (talk) 23:41, 27 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Whilst I remember, will this page's protection follow automatically on to 'Deaths in January 2013' and beyond ? It is just that I remember the IP (et al) free-for-all at the start of this year - a repeat would be good to avoid, if at all possible. Thanks,

Since Deaths in 2013 article exists, I added it to the navbox at the bottom of the article. It should help those who expect the 7-day thingy. Of course, January (2013) redirects to Di2013, as usual. — WylieCoyote 07:56, 31 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

For the extremely bored editors...

[edit]

Most of you do this, but when checking the respective names that have articles and changing things there (i.e. removing categories "Living People", adding "20XX deaths"), could you please go the talk pages and change the BLP/Living statuses too? Not a big deal, but my New Year's resolution is to simplify things in my life and Wiki is a big part of that. Thanks! — WylieCoyote 09:41, 29 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Salt Walther

[edit]

David "Salt" Walther is listed as dying 28th Dec.

This isn't the case. He died 27th December as per http://sports.yahoo.com/news/former-indy-500-driver-salt-024334708--spt.html.

Can this be amended. Please note (for his page), place of death is not Dayton. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.223.91.121 (talk) 12:39, 29 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Expanding entries in recent deaths on the Main page

[edit]

I've suggested that recent death-entries on the Main page should be expanded to include a short description of the people, similarly to what is done here. I'd appreciate additional comments at: Wikipedia talk:In the news#Expanding recent deaths to blurbs as well. Mikael Häggström (talk) 14:00, 29 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

So who decides which deaths to feature on the main page? Criteria? WWGB (talk) 14:14, 29 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know who maintains the "In The News" section on the main page, but I believe whoever does takes the most notable global recognizable recent death (from the Date pages) and adds it there. We could have 20 people die in one day and list it here, but, if none are noted worldwide, they don't get added to the Date page, and therefore neither to the Main page. Sad, but true. — WylieCoyote 04:27, 30 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
