Wikiproject Military history coordinator election nominations open
Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are now open. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting doesn't commence until 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the coord team. Cheers, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:53, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

DJ Butler
I'm doing some background research on DJ Butler for a possible page in my sandbox. He's a local steampunk/speculative fiction author, so I thought you might be interested. So far, I don't think there's enough material for a page, but if you know of some other sources on him, that could change. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 17:37, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Rachel Helps (BYU): Yeah, there aren't any articles about him (the interview doesn't count). He also hasn't won any awards that would help establish notability. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 17:45, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Portal:Anime and manga/Anniversaries/November/November 16 requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section P1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a portal which would be subject to speedy deletion if it were an article.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. — Mr. Guye (talk) (contribs) 05:00, 30 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Mr. Guye: That speedy deletion criterion makes no sense. Portal pages are not articles, especially not portal anniversary pages. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:33, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

Rachel Thorn
On October 9, 2018, Rachel Thorn tweeted: "It is really messed up that I've had a Wikipedia article since 2005, yet Dr. Strickland didn't get one till the day she won a Nobel prize. I wonder if I would have gotten one if people knew 13 years ago that I was a woman." The edit history of Rachel Matt Thorn shows that you created her page on October 22, 2005. I'm not sure she means now to impugn your integrity, but that does seem to be one possibility. Please, do you have a response? KalHolmann (talk) 03:53, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
- @KalHolmann: I created the page back then because (as Matt Thorn) she was very well known for being one of the first translators of manga in North America, and she'd had a lot of articles written about her. Therefore, she easily met WP:N and WP:V. I am not familiar with Dr. Strickland, so I can't say whether she had enough third-party coverage before her Nobel prize win. Basically, there's no reason to be trying to stir up controversy, KalHolmann, where there is none. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 17:08, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. RonBot (talk) 00:20, 31 October 2018 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free image File:Animage199709coverimage.png
Thanks for uploading File:Animage199709coverimage.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Vulphere 13:06, 11 November 2018 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's not used because you replaced it with an image that shouldn't have replaced it. I've reverted your change. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 01:29, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
advice on OTRS for deleted image
Can you see the OTRS stuff? Two years ago I was working on the Annie Poon page, and I was working with Poon to get an image of her on the page. She put an image on the page taken by her husband. Unfortunately, I didn't give them the right directions and the OTRS approval never went through at that time. Last week I gave Poon updated instructions, with the file name of the deleted file to put in the image file name blank of the release form (here). I put the OTRS pending template on the page, but someone deleted it... am I doing this wrong? I know people on Commons really don't like it when one uploads a previously deleted image, which is why I didn't want to try uploading it again. Can you go into OTRS and see if the release went through? Or if you don't have time for that, do you have any advice? thanks, Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 16:30, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Rachel Helps (BYU): I've grabbed the ticket and am waiting for her husband to reply with the permission. We can't accept forwarded permissions, so I asked Annie to have Kah Leong send a message to OTRS directly. Hopefully, everything will be resolved quickly. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:29, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

The article Marutsu Denpa has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
The coverage (references, external links, etc.) does not seem sufficient to justify this article passing Wikipedia:General notability guideline and the more detailed Wikipedia:Notability (companies) requirement. If you disagree and deprod this, please explain how it meets them on the talk page here in the form of "This article meets criteria A and B because..." and ping me back through WP:ECHO or by leaving a note at User talk:Piotrus. Thank you.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Huge Amount of Paid Editing and Paid article creation is done in India.
Please Take a look at these articles most of the artcles are just "GRADE SCHOOLS" and we all know that grade schools are not notable at all. The citation provided are not independent, and grades school are not notable these types of articles are created by such private school to attract students so they can increase their PROFITS, it's a very common practice in india. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion#G11 And also check who creates such advertisements he should be banned from editing Wikipedia there are more than 1000s of such non-notable paid advertisements in English Wikipedia.
You are my last hope for Independent Wikipedia in India. parents are forced to pay high fees in these schools as we all trust wikipedia, and these schools take advantage of it.

A new account, WokeNinja (talk · contribs), appears to be the same person -- identical extensive edits to Statement on Social Justice and nearly identical edit summaries -- and should be blocked for block evasion. Thank you.
Thank you for rescuing my article. I want to be very careful not to break any rules. My article might have been deleted in any case, but the reason given was that it was deleted because I did some editing on it myself, and because I posted on my Wikipedia page that it was scheduled for deletion. So, I don't want to make either of those mistakes again. I have been active on Wikipedia since 2005, and I was kind of aware of the "no autobiography" rule, but there was information that nobody else could reasonably know. Still not sure how I should have handled that. I had never heard of the "no mentioning outside Wikipedia that an article is scheduled for deletion". That seems counter-intuitive. All the people who voted to keep know something about my specialty, which is comic strips. None of the people who voted to delete said anything about comic strips. I would appreciate any advice you have. Rick Norwood (talk) 23:49, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)
ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.
Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.
We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.
For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
Japanese year in Template:Japan current era date
Hello, Nihonjoe, the creator of Template:Japan current era date. The current Japanese year is Reiwa 1, but in this template, the Japanese year is still Heisei 31. Both Heisei 31 and Reiwa 1 are the same year AD 2019 in Gregorian calendar, but they are different Japanese years. Thus, please correct this mistake in this template. 2019 US Banknote Contest
US Banknote Contest | ||
---|---|---|
November-December 2019 | ||
There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here |

The article Morinaga Hokuriku Dairy has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
No indication this company passes WP:GNG/WP:NCOMPANY
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Damon Runyon's short story "Dancing Dan's Christmas" is a fun read if you have the time. Right from the start it extols the virtues of the hot Tom and Jerry
No matter what concoction is your favorite to imbibe during this festive season I would like to toast you with it and to thank you for all your work here at the 'pedia this past year. Best wishes for your 2020 as well N. MarnetteD|Talk 20:51, 17 December 2019 (UTC) |
UPOL decline
Can you please explain how HeyImEric doesn't meet three criteria for UPOL blocks? 1.) it's promotional 2.) it DOES imply shared use and 3.) it's misleading and it implies that the actual editor is Eric Elliott. From their now deleted spammy draft: Known for: Hey I'm Eric, website:heyimeric.com
. Their userpage clearly indicates they are not Eric Elliott. Praxidicae (talk) 21:28, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Praxidicae: Perhaps if you'd marked it as promotional instead of writing
Violation of the username policy as a misleading username that implies shared use
? How does it imply shared use? Saying "I'm Eric" doesn't do so by any stretch of the imagination, nor does it imply they are any particular Eric. Just that their name is Eric. It's certainly promotional, but I was going by what you wrote in your report. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 21:59, 17 December 2019 (UTC) - @Praxidicae: And now they've been blocked as a spam account. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 22:03, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
- It shouldn't need explanation, that's why I reported it to UPOL and not ANI. If you looked at any of their edits, it was completely obvious. Even their userpage. And misleading was another one I selected. "I am the marketing/comms person for Eric blah blah" indicates they are not Eric. Praxidicae (talk) 22:09, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Praxidicae: In the future, please mark such accounts as spam accounts, not shared use accounts. That will help expedite the process. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 00:21, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

Did you intend to fully-protect this? (I only asked for template protection). * Pppery * it has begun... 03:35, 18 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Pppery: Fixed. It must have slipped to the one below template editor access. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 19:20, 18 December 2019 (UTC)
