I attempted reading this book once before, but I was simultaneously reading Darwish's Unfortunately, It Was Paradise: Selected Poems Honestly, I couldn't take a single word of this book, I was like really? this is your biggest problem? it was all too superfluous for me.
but now that I have read it with a clear mind, I think this book is nice. it was not way my fav (which is disappointing as I was looking forward to reading this) but it is still a charming little read. of course, I didn't read this for any sort of love advice so it being a friendship heavy book was alright to me (some will say it is perfect)
I did relate to a lot of stuff that the author said, especially towards the second half of the book.
overall, don't go in expecting a deep, philosophical book. it is like a conversation on a rainy night with your girlfriends. ...more

This book has been on my TBR for so long. Everytime I saw this book on a list I went- I so want to read this and did nothing about it which is a more common occurrence than you will imagine. So, I finally decided to tackle it after reading and loving When We Were Orphans.
I think I wanted to love this book so badly that I was left a little disappointed. Not to say that I didn't love the writing. Ishiguro's writing is so haunting, and beautiful, and bleak. Its like submerging in icy cold water. He is quickly turning into one of my favs.
I loved Kathy's character. I loved her voice. Ishiguro's narrators tend to be not exactly reliable. But I enjoyed following her through the book.
As for the actual plot with the twist and devastating ending, I saw it coming from so way. I just knew ain't no way this book was ending on a happy note.
It did felt weaker than When We Were Orphans. That is such a dear and lovely book. I couldn't help but compare the two in my head.
Overall, read this if you like bleak narration, looming boarding schools, and devastating fates....more

I cannot express in words how dearly I wanted to fall in love with these books. It has a beautiful cover, snowy vibes, and Russian folklore; all of the elements of a potential favorite book.
This isn't to say that I hated the book, in fact, I quite enjoyed it. There are a few things that quite annoyed me, namely how everyone was acting so dumb. Vasilisa I can forgive, because she is barely an adult but Morozko??? Sir, you are supposed to be an eternal, immortal being and you don't realize that if she goes back to her village, they will tear her apart.
I was so intrigued by Kasyan. He and Vasya had something that she lacked with Morozko. Although I could guess his intentions from a mile away, I enjoyed his character.
My favorite character in this book was Olga. I love female characters that are not your badass stereotype but are still strong. I loved whenever she was on the page.
It goes without saying that Arden is masterful in building cozy and vivid ambiences. That is one of the strong point of this book.
Read this if you like fairy tales, Russian folklore, and slightly dumb but loveable characters. ...more

The Haunting of Aveline Jones gave me the same feels as Horrid but this was waaaay more creepy for me. It had the classic ghost story elements but I WAS CRAVING THAT RN OKAY???
My only qualm with the book is that I dearly wished it was longer. It would have been so much better if the entire mystery thing was more developed (with flashbacks from the past maybe)
But anyway, read this if you loved creepy sea side towns, wailing ghosts, and crumbling bookstores. ...more

you know what is not a source of pure happiness- this book. there are two reasons I took this long to read this book- one is that I kept getting distracted by the videos of their performances, vlogs etc (although it is high time to please add some english subs we're begging) and second because it was so tedious.
this book reads like a long article without any semblance of emotional depth in it. the only parts that spoke to me were the members' comments in between. they were my favorite thing in the entire book. I could give all the stars to these seven boys to Korea that made it big in the world and has my life so much more beautiful.
but the point stands that this book was boring and could have used a lot of emotional depth....more

I still can't believe that I have finished this one. I have been dying to read this for a LONG time. But it was underwhelming.
I did ended up liking the book but for completely different reasons than I should. I liked the coziness of the small town and the daily routine of Jane, idk if that makes me weird but I really can't wait for winter to finally knock on my door. So much could have been done with the setting in this book. I loved the roses and the mist (basically the imagery in the book)
And shoutout to Jane's friends- THEY ARE ADORABLE. I will do anything to read an AU with these kids but in slightly less spooky setting....more

Nothing is comparable to that except the wretched feeling of anticipating a beautiful book and absolutely hating it. Look at this cover and then at my rating. This book started SO beautifully that it is a shame how it ended. I could give this book a 1.25 star rating but honestly I would rather not because I just finished it and I was bored out of my mind. Maybe in the morning I will feel more kindly about the absolute mess of our main character and the turn that this book take....more

In all honesty, I think it was me. I just didn't feel in the mood for this book. I was waiting for this book to be exceptional which didn't happen. Some of the writing here is breathtaking but in some places, it also feels forced due to translation.
I deeply, deeply wish I could give this book a 5 star. ...more
