BAR HARBOR

Scientific Director: Dr. Nadia Rosenthal

Our Bar Harbor campus is home to The Jackson Laboratory for Mammalian Genetics, and has been the organization's headquarters since 1929. Research faculty here investigate the genetic basis of human disease by using the mouse as a model, working closely with human genomics researchers at JAX Genomic Medicine in Farmington, Connecticut. Bar Harbor also hosts many of JAX’s landmark educational programs.

The campus boasts 68 buildings on 169 acres on Mount Desert Island, between the Gulf of Maine and the mountains of Acadia National Park, and is just one mile from the center of Bar Harbor. The area is a renowned vacation destination, with ready access to hiking, biking, boating and many cultural opportunities.

Our Bar Harbor team appreciates a casual work atmosphere and our many campus amenities. The site features a full-service café, a well-appointed fitness center with a full-time personal trainer, an onsite MBA program for professional development, and a medical clinic providing care for employees and their families. Employees enjoy hikes during lunch and the many JAX clubs that enhance our active community.

More information about Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island can be found at the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce.

ELLSWORTH

The Jackson Laboratory's Charles E. Hewett Center is located in the town of Ellsworth, an inviting community in the heart of Downeast Maine. Many residential options are available in the area, as well as excellent shopping, dining and access to regional cultural activities. Centrally located, Ellsworth is a short drive to JAX’s Bar Harbor campus, to Acadia National Park, and to many communities up and down the coast.

The state-of-the-art Ellsworth facility, which opened in late 2018, is the only one of its kind in the world. It is the result of over nine decades of unmatched experience and leadership in breeding and caring for laboratory mice, and provides the global biomedical research community with increased access to JAX® Mice with opportunistic- and pathogen-free health status.

More information about the Ellsworth area can be found at the Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce.

AUGUSTA

Medical Director: Dr. Jens Rueter

The Maine Cancer Genomics Initiative, an alliance of Maine oncology providers led by JAX, is located at the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care in Augusta.

MCGI is aimed at making precision medicine, innovative clinical trials, access to targeted therapies and novel technology available for cancer patients throughout Maine. It is the first program of its kind in the country; a state-wide community genomics project that brings cutting-edge cancer care to oncology practices in rural areas.

As the seat of State and County Government and a major hub of business and industry, the Augusta area has a vibrant economy and many cultural opportunities. Learn more about the Augusta area at the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce.

PORTLAND

Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer: Mary Dickinson, Ph.D.

JAX’s Portland, ME location is importantly located mid-way between existing campuses in Bar Harbor, ME, and Farmington, CT, fostering collaboration and innovation within the organization’s scientific community. The Portland facility brings together scientists, software engineers and other skilled experts while also building local, national and international partnerships that will allow researchers across the globe to integrate their data, tools and findings to facilitate data driven discovery worldwide. Currently, JAX is leasing temporary space from Northeastern adjacent to the existing home of the Roux Institute in Portland. JAX is a founding partner of the Roux Institute, a partnership that has generated an extensive pipeline of initiatives aligned with the Laboratory’s strategic priorities, including cooperative education opportunities, degree and certificate enrollment, experiential learning, research collaborations and grants.
